Activity Insights

What is Word Families?

This activity encourages students to look at patterns in words, helping them generalize from familiar to unfamiliar words.

Why do students struggle with Word Families?

Make sure that the student can visually differentiate between n & h, b & d, q & p and recognize hard g and c sounds. Also check that students have made meaningful letter to sound links. Finally, make sure students’ attention has not drifted.

How do I further support students?

Do extension activities in the classroom that encourage students to work with words families and identify words from a same family. Explain why and how these words are associated.
