Activity Insights
What is Syllable Counting?
This activity asks students to identify the syllables that make up a word.
Why do students struggle with Syllable Counting?
Students having difficulty with this activity may not be isolating the separate syllables within a word. They may need to practice slowly saying 1-4 syllable words, clapping or counting the syllables in 1-, 2-, and 3-syllable words, or saying each syllable in 2- and 3-syllable words e.g. (con-fi-dent). Check that students can count from 1 to 4 (at least) comfortably.
How do I further support students?
Ask students to count the syllables in their names. Practice syllable counting with objects in the classroom.
