Letter Sound Search

Overview

Objective

Given the pronunciation of a letter sound, the student must identify and find its associated letter.

Facilitation Tips

This activity can be used in pairs or by an individual student. If done in pairs, a student finds one letter then lets the other student have a turn. If the student cannot find it, the other student can give him or her a clue as to where the letter is; e.g., "it is in a corner".

Levels

Level 1: 10 letters camouflaged in an easy background; i.e., s, p, m, t, c, d, n, a, h, r.

Level 2: 14 letters camouflaged in a medium background; i.e., g, l, o, k, u, b, e, f, l, z, d, h, p, r.

Level 3: 14 letters camouflaged in a hard background; i.e., w, j, v, y, q, x, g, i, b, l, a, t, e, h.

Activity Insights

What is Letter Sound Search?

Students must Identify letters based on a letter’s corresponding sound.

Why do students struggle with Letter Sound Search?

Some students may have problems distinguishing certain letters from each other simply because of the visual similarities. Problematic letters include p, b, d, q, m, n, t, l, u, v.

How do I further support students?

Practice the p,d,b,q letter orientation and elongating the sounds of m = mmmmm and n = nnn. In level three, pay special attention to the 'q' sound as is Iraqi. You can introduce the 'qu' sound when teaching sound blends.
