Given the visual representation of a word, the student must say the sounds of the letters then blend them together to read the word. Finally, they match the word read to a picture.

Facilitation Tips

This activity combines the sounding out of letters and blending them to make words. Teachers or another student can assist with scaffolding or picture matching when necessary.

Levels

Level 1: 2-sound (phoneme) words.

Level 2: 3-sound (phoneme) words.

Level 3: Harder 3-sound words.

Level 4: 4-sound words.

Level 5: Harder 4-sound words.

Level 6: 5-sound words.

Level 7: Harder 5-sound words.

Note

Please note that the LTK+ team has discovered that the segmented version of words that should have a short O, instead use a long O. For example, the word dog is segmented as /d/ /oʊ/ /g/ instead of the proper /dɒg/. We will work to correct this error.

Activity Insights

What is Basic Decoding?

Introducing graphemes allows students to make connections between written language and the word they represent. Students have to decode the words correctly in order to identify its corresponding image.

Why do students struggle with Basic Decoding?

Students struggle when they cannot identify the sounds in the words or they don’t know what sounds phonemes and graphemes make.

How do I further support students?

If students are having difficulty choosing the correct image, encourage them to take the time to decode the word and use the help feature to sound out the word. Practice decoding with students as much as you can in the classroom. Encourage students to break down sounds in words as well as to identify different sounds whenever they can.
