Auditory Blending

Overview

Objective

Given a phonemic breakdown, the student will identify a word, i.e., /c/ /a/ /t/ = «cat».

Facilitation Tips

Students can do this activity in pairs and take turns (one word per turn) to identify the word and find its matching picture.

Levels

Level 1: 2-sound (phoneme) words.

Level 2: 3-sound (phoneme) words.

Level 3: Harder 3-sound words.

Level 4: 4-sound words.

Level 5: Harder 4-sound words.

Level 6: 5-sound words.

Level 7: Harder 5-sound words.

Note

Please note that the LTK+ team has discovered that the segmented version of words that should have a short O, instead use a long O. For example, the word dog is segmented as /d/ /oʊ/ /g/ instead of the proper /dɒg/. We will work to correct this error.

Activity Insights

What is Auditory Blending?

Blending phonemes into real words will help students associate phonemes with text. This activity is a more complex part of phonemic awareness and requires that the student have a solid understanding of one-letter and blend phonemes.

Why do students struggle with Auditory Blending?

Students having difficulty blending the different sounds to make a word may not be able to orally blend syllables or onset/rimes into words. Consequently, blending 2-4 phoneme words will be a very difficult task.

How do I further support students?

Make sure that students have mastered individual phonemes as well as onset/rime recognition before doing this activity. Suggest students work on Same Phoneme to reinforce phoneme recognition.
