Vocabulary (ESL)
Overview
Objective
The student will be able to match a given word with its corresponding picture then use the word appropriately in a given sentence.
Facilitation Tips
This activity is best done individually or in pairs. If done in pairs, students can take turns controlling the mouse as they each do a set. The other student is there to support and provide assistance if necessary.
Levels
The first half of this activity gives students a set of five words and asks them to select the matching picture. The second part presents five incomplete sentences and the student must select which of these words best fits the sentence.

What is Vocabulary (ESL)?
This activity has two parts: students first make a connection between a spoken word and a illustration of the word’s meaning. Then, they choose a the correct word to to fill in a blank left a sentence.
Why do students struggle with Vocabulary (ESL)?
Students who are having difficulty making the visual connection may not understand the images being shown or the cues may not be meaningful.
How do I further support students?
Use other pictorial references and verbal cues to help students make meaningful visual connections to the words. If students are having trouble completing the sentences, ask guiding question to help them focus on the appropriate word. Also consider having students re-read the story linked to the activity in order to practice and review vocabulary words.
